Nesting comfortably on the “Platinum Coast” in the Parish of St. Peter - one of the eleven Barbados parishes - Cobblers Cove is ideally situated for exploring the less-developed northern half of the island.
Within easy walking distance along the beach is the quaint historic town of Speightstown, the first major port and commercial centre of Barbados. Back in the 17th century it was called “Little Bristol” through its trading connections with England’s Bristol. Still today, if you close your eyes and listen carefully to native Barbadians (known as Bajans) you could be in Somerset, Cornwall or Devon.
Much renovated in recent years, Speightstown is a busy, bustling place where locals from surrounding areas - avoiding the long trip to Bridgetown - come to do their shopping and banking.
On certain days street vendors ply their trade with ample supplies of fresh fruits and vegetables. Speightstown also boasts three well-stocked supermarkets and throughout town in delightful little shops in historic building dating from colonial times you can find everything from International Voltage Adapters, Mobile-phone top-ups and freshly-caught octopus to local and regional music CD’s and T-Shirts in every size and colour to take home to the grandchildren.
A “must visit” is to the recently opened Arlington House Museum where exhibits embody different aspects of the island’s culture and give great pleasure to visitors and locals alike. Prints of Old Barbados and other exotic items are on view.
Within easy striking distance from Cobblers by rented car or taxi are many places and sights to make your visit unforgettable;
In the National Park atop Farley Hill you’ll get at breathtaking view of the spectacular East Coast.
Directly across the road in mahogany woodland you’ll see green monkeys and other animals roaming free at the Barbados Wildlife Reserve.
No visit to Barbados is complete without a visit to St. Nicholas Abbey, one of only three genuine Jacobean mansions in the Western Hemisphere. Where you’ll also see a fascinating short movie about Barbados before time caught up with it. A very short distance from the abbey through a dense forest to remind you how Barbados once looked before anyone settled here you’ll arrive at the “peak” of Cherry Tree Hill. And symbolising Barbados itself take the iconic photo of the East Coast stretching as far as Bathsheba.
Incidentally, there can be very few places anywhere in the world - on mainland or island -- with a similar miles-long practically-deserted beach for such invigorating walks like Barbados' East Coast.
For a dramatic chance of pace - and scenery - head due north to Animal Flower Cave and North Point. To see the wild and wonderful Atlantic Ocean crashing against high cliffs before merging with the tranquil Caribbean Sea and where, if you’re lucky you’ll see ingenious men catching sharks on their lines from the shore.
As you can see there is so much to do from Cobblers. And so little if you so decide.
